1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird- Sold For $415,000 at Mecum Harrisburg 2017 Auto Action

The main attractions at 2017 Mecum Harrisburg Auto Auction was this amazing 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird. The hammer dropped at $415,000.00 for this original 426 Hemi car with 17,000 original miles, and is one of only 58 built with heavier duty A833 4 speed transmission.

‘The Aero Warrior’

The Plymouth Hemi Superbird was developed for NASCAR racing, a modified Road Runner, it was Plymouth’s version of the car fielded by its sister company the Dodge Charger Daytona. In 1969 Dodge Charger 500 was the first American car the to be designed by using s wind tunnel and computer analysis, with more research they came up with further modifications to reduce drag and improve downforce. They added a pointy nose and a tall rear spoiler, and it became the Charger Daytona. The Superbird’s aero package was further refined with smoother body line, adding nineteen inches to the length compared to the Road Runner.

Engineered for NASCAR Racing.

A minimum of 1920 Superbird were required to be produced to race in NASCAR do to the change in homologation requirement in 1970. NASCAR demanded a minimum production of one car for every two manufacturer’s dealers in the United States and must be available to public. Even though, all race versions of the Superbird came with the powerful 426 Hemi, only 93 street production models were equipped with the Hemi. Most models got the 440 Super Commandos or 440 six-packs.

 

Built For Top Speed.

The top speed for the NASCAR Superbird is documented at over 200 mph. However, street models depending on the Drivetrain package reached speeds of 130 to 150 mph. In the 80’s a Superbird topped 216 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats, making it at that time the fastest production car in the world.
